OUR HISTORY

This Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was established in 1995 just seven years after Islamic University in Uganda had been established with three undergraduate degree programmes i.e. Bachelor of Social Sciences Combined Honours (BSS), Bachelor of Arts Combined Honours (BA) and B.Sc. Mass Communication. The Faculty has since introduced many other programmes and these programmes provide tremendous opportunity for career advancement and development.

Faculty of Science has been served by numerous deans since its inception in 1995. Three of these deans were foreigners from Nigeria, India and Egypt. The list of previous deans is given in the table below:

OUR STRENGTHS
  • - The faculty has the capacity to create awareness among parents and potential students using IUIU FM radio.
  • - Diversity - Faculty has both local and International students
  • - The Faculty offers Professional Study programmes accredited by NCHE such as Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication, Bachelor of Social Sciences, Bachelor of Development Studies, Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration etc. which are critical need to our society
  • - FASS has lecture rooms which are shared by other Faculties
  • - Technology-All Undergraduate students are taught computer Application
  • - Internet/Wireless campuses
  • - Integration of moral values in teaching and learning
OUR THREATS
  • - Enrollment - Declining number of students local and international
  • - Increased competition from both private and public Universities
  • - Low remuneration
  • - Students/parents inadequate knowledge about academic programmes offered
  • - Poor recruitment and retention of senior staff.
OUR WEAKNESSES
  • - Declining Enrolment of students in different programmes in the Faculty
  • - There is little or no Integration of technology in teaching and learning
  • - Inadequate senior academic staff
  • - Inadequate research and publications
  • - Inadequate teaching facilities
OUR OPPORTUNITIES
  • - Faculty has potential to offer programs that are accepted in the global labour market
  • - Opportunities for ICT to support and transform teaching and learning
  • - Strengthen programs in technology
  • - Distance learning–Technology improvement to help start online programmes (Distance Learning)
  • - Opportunity to ensure that new programmes in the faculty are the best, for teaching and learning

OUR FUTURE PLANS

Faculty of ARts and Social Sciences has the following programs and activities in pipeline

1. Future Strategic Objectives of the Faculty
  • - Increase enrolment of students in various programs in the Faculty
  • - Produce all round graduates and enhance their employability of our graduates
  • - Develop community outreach programs
  • - Develop and maintain result oriented management
  • - Develop and maintain high performing teamwork
  • - Enhance professional growth and excellence
  • - Attract and maintain competent committed staff
  • - To engage in and publish research of international repute
2. Future Programs

The following programs are in pipeline:

  • 1. Recruitment of full time lecturers in the Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics. This Department relies more on Part time lecturers. Also, the Department of Social Work and Social Administration.
  • 2. Establish a Television station
  • 3. Increase the number of IUIU-FM marketers from one to three. One must be positioned in Kampala at King Fahd Plaza to attract business from Kampala. All upcountry radio stations get the biggest advertisers from Kampala.
  • 4. Need for multimedia laboratories across campuses with modern softwares and equipment.
  • 5. To rebrand our programmes to include vocational skills training
  • 6. To introduce short courses for skills empowerment targeting local government workers among others
  • 7. Improving on our training facilities in order to attract student numbers.
  • 8. Transforming IUIU-Gazette into a newspaper or magazine that can attract advertising revenue that can be used to improve the Faculty.
  • 9. Establishing video-audio-photo production studios that can be run on a commercial basis producing saleable video, audio clips and photos.
  • 10. Undertaking research projects in the community that can attract funding from local companies and international NGOs.
  • 11. Elongation of IUIU-FM Mast to attract other radio stations to hire it.
  • 12. Starting Certificate courses in various disciplines such as English, Public Speaking, Radio Journalism and TV Journalism.
  • 13. University management need to use its influence and power to attract potential advertisers among its service providers like stationery suppliers, internet providers, fuel providers, suppliers of construction materials etc. This will enable IUIU-FM to get revenue with the influence from IUIU’s administration.
  • 14. Attract outside professionals as visiting professors to help in designing and facilitating PhD programmes to uplift the image of the Faculty.
  • 15. To have two intakes in an academic year in August and January.
  • 16. Having a faculty Guest house with conference facilities that can be used locally and also hired to generate income.
