OUR HISTORY

The Faculty of Science (FOS) was established at the Islamic University in Uganda in the 1994/1995 Academic Year.

When IUIU was opened up in 1988, it had only two faculties – Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language, and Faculty of Education. At the time, Science Department was part of Faculty of Education and it was headed by Dr. L. M. Ogwal.

The first Science students were admitted in 1990 under the Rectorship of Al Hajj Abubakar Kakyama Mayanja and Prof. T. Nsereko Gyagenda as the vice rector. When Prof. Adam Mahad, became Rector, he introduced three other faculties of which Faculty of Science was among. The first Dean was Prof. Mkafi, a mathematician from Nigeria.

VISION

In line with the University vision, Faculty of Science aims at producing and disseminating scientific knowledge, relevant skills and training necessary to produce all round science professionals who shall be of great value to the current and future society needs.

MISSION

The faculty desires to function as a component of the university to attain its vision, mission and core values by creating a scientific and Islamic impact on society. This can be achieved by using scientific methods in teaching and being innovative in a manner that is acceptable and relevant to the academic global environment and Islam.

PHILOSOPHY

Faculty of Science’s philosophy lies in training professionals, undertaking research and innovations in Science and Technology. This is to contribute to the knowledge base of the Ummah.

CORE VALUES

In line with the University core values, the FOS promotes;

  • Freedom of thought and expression within the boundaries of Islam as precondition for growth and academic excellence.
  • Tolerance of contrary views and ideas to enable the Faculty exist in the cotemporary, heterogeneous and knowledge based society.
  • Research as the major basis for building the knowledge productive capacity of the Faculty.
  • Attraction and retention of brilliant staff who are the core of academic excellence.
  • Promotion, protection and dissemination of Islamic ideals and values.
INFRASTRUCTURE

In line with the University core values, the FOS promotes;

Office Space

Faculty of Science is lucky to be occupying the building that initially housed the university administration before the Blue Building was built. The block houses the deanship and the departments of Environmental Science, Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Mathematics and Statistics. However, this block is now too small to host all these departments. It is therefore important, that the faculty be given a Science Complex to house offices laboratories and lecturer rooms.

Lecture Rooms

Faculty of Science has no single lecturer room. Our teaching is done in laboratories which disadvantages practical sessions and research activities. If a Science complex is constructed for the faculty, it will solve the problem of space and facilitate e-learning.

Laboratories

The faculty has eight laboratories, four of which are all computer laboratories. The sitting capacity of the computer laboratories ranges from 30 to 45 students. One of computer laboratories is well equipped with sufficient facilities to teach CISCO. With this, the National CISCO Academy has encouraged us to apply to become a standalone CISCO academy.

The food Science laboratory has served as an innovation center and many food products have processed in this laboratory. Many of these products are sold to the university and surrounding communities. It is important to note that all these laboratories need renovation and equipping with advanced technology equipment.

The other laboratories are Food Science Laboratory, Chemistry Laboratory, Biology Laboratory and Physics Laboratory

OUR OBJECTIVES

Faculty of Science was created to achive the following

  • To contribute to Science, Technology and Innovation as a major weapon for improving livelihoods of our communities.
  • To act as a centre of excellence in dissemination of scientific knowledge in the region and beyond through cutting-edge research projects in basic and applied sciences.
  • To undertake research that provides solutions to society based problems.
  • To equip our students with practical skills relevant for job creation.
  • To train science teachers in response to the acute shortage of science teachers country wide.
  • To contribute to the development of technical skills at both national and international level by stimulating interests in the study of science subjects.
  • To develop relevant human resource for re-awakening and sustaining local interest in science and technology
  • To serve as a power source of scientists for the Ummah.

3. Science Complex

The university should prioritize the construction of a science complex to house FOS offices, lecture rooms and laboratories.

4. Faculty Journal

The faculty is already in the process of producing a Science journal.

5. Faculty Handbook

Faculty of Science plans come up with a handbook that provides the details of the faculty.

6. Remedial Science Program for Ugandans with UACE

It is our future plan to enroll Biology students who have attempted UACE into a remedial programme.

7. CISCO Certification Center

Following the visit by the National CISCO academy, FOS was advised to start a CISCO certification center. This will serve as a testing center and enable IUIU to certify, over 600 courses. We intend to go commercial on CISCO, not only depending on the students enrolled for undergraduates but also enroll those who come to learn CISCO alone. We also intend to start Net Riders exams competition at IUIU that will help our students to compete internationally in the CISCO academy. When the National CISCO visited on 16th June 2017, IUIU scored an “A” in the performance of CISCO.

8. Faculty Of ICT

The department of Computer Science has been in existence at IUIU for 19 years. The University has built the department's capacity by training staff in the area of ICT through staff development program. With the largest number of programs and staff in the university, the department of Computer Science can be natured into a faculty.
