The Vice Rector-Academic Affairs (VR-AA) is responsible for all the academic affairs of the university. As such, he oversee programmes and policies that promote academic excellence in the University; ensures quality of academic programmes; oversees proper planning and coordination of undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes; coordinates curriculum development; and ensures optimal utilization of teaching, research and library facilities. The VR-AA monitors all the Faculties, Centres, Schools, and the University Library. In so doing, he is assisted by the Department of the Academic Registrar
Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, Ph.D.
Dr. Gyagenda, Associate Professor of Education, was born in Itendero, Sheema District (formerly part of Bushenyi District). He attended Kabwohe Muslim Primary School, Mbarara High school, and St. Mary’s College, Kisubi. He graduated from Makerere University in 1979 with a 1st Class B.A. Honors (Literature and Religious Studies), and a concurrent Dip.Ed. He was also Chairman, Makerere University Muslim Students Association 1980-1982.
In 1987, he graduated from Yarmouk University, Jordan with M.Ed. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. In the same year, he was part of the pioneer staff who started the Islamic University in Uganda in Mbale, where he was one of the male Wardens. He also lectured there in History of Education in East Africa and Introduction to Arabic.
Since 1988, he has been in the USA, where he obtained an M.A. in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of District of Columbia in 1989. In 1999, he obtained his Ph.D. in Educational Studies from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. He joined Mercer University, Atlanta campus in 2001, where he has worked until his appointment as Vice Rector, Academic Affairs at IUIU. His research interests include urban education, culture and schooling, and Muslim institutes of higher education in Africa.
