IUIU’S Rector Pulls Investors As He Unveils The University’s Master Plan To President Museveni

Islamic university in Uganda was among the organizations that presented on the Uganda-Somali investment and business summit that took place on 10th August, 2022. It was the only organization under the Education sector. In his presentation professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda Rector Islamic university in Uganda unveiled IUIU’S master plan which left the investors in investment moods.

The rector started his presentation by appreciating the president of the republic of Uganda H.E Yoweri kaguta Museveni who was present during his presentation for supporting the education sector. He commended the NRM government for supporting the university’s agenda over the years through land donations in prime areas and other support in areas of academics. He also called upon investors to come and grab opportunities in taking over the business the proposed business arm which is part of the University’s master plan, he further advised them to commit their capital in Uganda, saying there were unexploited opportunities in the education sector especially at Islamic university in Uganda. Rector gave an example of MOI University in Burundi which has a grain mill and a factory that helps them yield income to run the university in other aspects where funds are not enough for their ongoing university activities from time to time.

The audience which was observed nodding in acceptance seemed to love the idea of the university’s plan to go in business as part of the income generating areas. He concluded by inviting the Somali community to come and be part of the university’s campuses which has over 400 students from Somalia. IUIU has four campuses offering 72 programmes in 7 faculties, the main campus in Mbale, Kampala campus in kibuli, Arua campus and the Females’ campus in Natete- kabojja which is the fastest growing campus with over 1278 female students.

Last year, IUIU signed a Memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) Puntland State, Somalia to collaborate on capacity building and Human Resource Development. As part of the University’s plans to champion the education sector, it has signed MOUs with both local and international universities and these include Kampala international university, Islamic Call University College, Uganda Christian university, Bauch state university in Nigeria, Abdul Rahman Al-summit University in Zanzibar etc. When the president gave his speech, he pledged to support both local and international investors in all aspects so that the two countries achieve a common goal. The president argued local investors to support the ideas and the agenda of international investors from Somalia.

 Minister of State Privatization and Investment. Hon Evelyne Anite who also addressed the gathering pointed out some of the key reasons for the summit and these were to promote collaboration in education sector and skills development in both countries, strengthen the cooperation between the federal republic of Somalia and the Uganda investment authorities, Promote and develop cooperation in mutually identified sectors especially in ICT, Agro business, Foster exchange of information among enterprises of information, Encourage and support joint projects between the government and the people of both countries. Other delegates that attended include former Prime Minister and special presidential envoy Rt. hon Amama Mbabazi, Minister for justice and constitutional affairs Hon Nobert Mao.
