Gov’t Chooses IUIU to Implement Technological Skills Based Project

Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has been chosen by the government of Uganda to implement a technological skills based project dubbed Reverse Linkage set to start by March 2019.

 

According to Professor Ismail Ssimbwa Gyagenda, the Vice Rector in charge of Academic Affairs, the reverse-linkage project is an initiative of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an Islamic body composed of 52 member countries including Uganda, which links countries with poor technological skills to those with better technological skills among member states.

 

“After OIC linked Uganda to the Turkish government, our institution was chosen as an implementer, something that we openly embraced because it will enable us achieve our objective of community empowerment” Professor Gyagenda added.

 

Through this project,  students and community members shall learn among others hands on skills in tailoring, fashion technology, web designing, computer programming, metal works and fabrication, culinary arts, baking, video production and bee keeping.

 

The Vice Rector further elaborated that the Turkish government will send experts from Istanbul Metropolitan Learning Centre (IMLC); a center in charge of vocational skills in Turkey, to carry out Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop in different skills and technology based areas.

 

“The TOT beneficiaries will then be retained at the University as staffs who will then transfer the knowledge to the interested IUIU students and community members in the different areas across the country” he said.

 

Professor Gyagenda further noted that some of these skilled courses will go for three to four months after which, the beneficiary shall be able to produce among others, products like, fashionable T-shits, suits, gowns, do computer programing to enable them make a living besides their professional careers.

 

The University Secretary Mr. Lukyamuzi Hussein disclosed that plans are underway to execute an awareness campaign aimed at preparing the students and the community to embrace the project when it starts.

Nevertheless, the University also plans to include these vocational skills in the university curriculum for students to supplement on their study programmes so that they can stand out in the challenging job market. In 2017 IUIU was crowned the best institution in Uganda by Visionaries of Uganda consortium for its affordable and quality education which addresses community challenges responding to unemployment.
