IUIU celebrates Labor Day in style.

Islamic University in Uganda celebrated International Labour Day in style on the 1st of May 2023 at the civil service college in Jinja with a staff party.

The annual event which had been halted due to covid 19 for the last three years was organized by the office of the university secretary to bring together all members of staff and their families from the different campuses of the Islamic university in Uganda.

The assistant university secretary, Mr Kinsambwe Rashid said that due to the lockdown and other effects of covid 19, the university was unable to organize the get-together parties. ‘’ the last time we had a staff party was in 2019. In 2020, 2021, and 2022 the university was still recovering from the shock of covid 19 like the restrictions on gatherings and financial issues.’’ He said. 

The event was filled with activities like fundraising, sports competitions in football, netball, and tag of war between campuses and children’s games. Each staff was allowed to come along with two family members.

The director of IUIU Kampala Campus, Dr. Twaha Ahmed Kasule called upon the staff to join the campaign to contribute funds to be used to roof the house of the late engineer Sunna Bruhan who was the assistant university engineer at the Kampala campus. 

The netball team from the Main campus Mbale, emerged as winners in the lady's netball competitions. In contrast, the football team from the female campus kabojja was the winner in the football competitions with each winner in the category taking home a trophy and goat as a prize.

While speaking at the event, the Rector of IUIU Prof Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda thanked the almighty Allah that IUIU had made 35 years and that the celebration is a means to show gratitude to the staff for their dedication to serving the university and informed them that they are the reason the university has progressed to its current stage.

Prof Ismail also highlighted the plans of IUIU like strengthening Agro business by developing the IUIU farm, and internationalization of IUIU to become the leading university in the OIC member countries with a focus on ICT and innovation.

The Rector also emphasized the need to Strengthen the Alumni association and strengthen welfare and connections. He commended President Yoweri Museveni and the government for their continued support of higher education and appealed for more support.

Prof Ismail appreciated the support given to him in his leadership and that although some people still see him as a new person, He has been with the university since the olden days as a male warden in 1988 and is happy to be serving the university.
