The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) hosted a strategic plan and budgeting workshop at its main campus in Mbale on Tuesday, August 20, 2023. The event was attended by members of the university's executive board, including Rector Assoc. Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, Vice-Rector Finance and Administration Prof. Abdul Kaziba Mpaata, Vice-Rector incharge of Academics Dr. Jamil Serwanga, the academic registrar, campus directors, department heads, and faculty deans.

Assoc. Prof. Ismail emphasized IUIU’s growing reputation as a leading institution of higher learning that has become a top choice for both students and parents. He commended the dedication of the Deans and Directors, attributing the university’s success to their hard work.

Prof Ismail also highlighted the challenges facing the university and urged all staff members to collaborate towards fulfilling the objectives outlined in the 2021-2026 strategic plan to ensure the continued growth of the institution.

Prof. Abdul presented the strategic plan, outlining both the strengths and areas needing improvement at IUIU pointing to resources such as land, the commitment of management, and partnerships with international organizations like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as key strengths. He acknowledged ongoing financial challenges, including economic difficulties faced by the population and student fraternity and donor fatigue.

The strategic plan also focuses on fostering growth and academic excellence, particularly through the adoption of blended learning and enhanced access to ICT. The Director of Kampala Campus encouraged active participation in budget formulation to ensure resources are allocated to priority areas.

Dr. Jamil noted the timely nature of the workshop, especially in light of new trends that are impacting the higher education sector. He stressed the importance of implementing the strategic plan in alignment with IUIU's vision, mission, and core values.

Dr. Jamil reiterated that strategic planning and budgeting are crucial for the university's growth and development, which can be achieved through the integration of various systems, a shift in paradigms, openness to new ideas among others.
