Islamic University in Uganda Holds Farewell Dinner for Turkish Exchange Students

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) hosted a farewell dinner on Thursday, October 17, at the main campus in Mbale to Honor a group of Turkish students who completed their studies under the university’s language program celebrating academic achievements and cross-cultural experiences of four students from Turkey who were warmly embraced by the IUIU community.

The students included Beyza Betül Ekici a graduate student in History from İnönü University, Gülşen Yağmur Yolcu graduate student in International Relations, İlknur Ökke a fourth-year student of Theology, Şeyma İnan a student of English Language and Literature, who studied the English language for three months under the Department of Language and Linguistics at IUIU.

Dr. Jamil Serwanga, Vice Rector in charge of Academic Affairs, commended the Turkish students for their dedication and the remarkable discipline they displayed throughout the program. In his address, Dr. Serwanga assured that IUIU remains committed to sustaining and expanding similar exchange initiatives.

He expressed gratitude to the Dean of the Faculty, staff members, and the Academic Registrar for their contributions toward the success of the program. Dr. Serwanga emphasized the importance of maintaining English proficiency as a continuous project for the Department of Language and Linguistics.

He also urged staff members to take a personal interest in learning new languages, highlighting the benefits such skills offer in terms of global opportunities. Dr. Serwanga concluded by encouraging the department to attract more international students and present their findings on the program to the university’s Academic Board for further development.

Dr. Halima Wakabi, the Academic Registrar, acknowledged the significant improvements in the students’ fluency since their arrival. She credited the faculty and instructors for their tireless efforts and praised the Turkish students for their resilience and adaptability.

Dr. Halima suggested expanding the program to incorporate online study options, making it more accessible to other international students. She further expressed gratitude to the donors who provided essential support for the students during their stay.

Mr. Otai Hassan, one of the tutors involved in the program, expressed his gratitude to IUIU management for their vision and commitment in making the initiative a reality.

He emphasized the role of discipline in their progress and urged the students to remain committed to using the English language regularly to build on the skills they have acquired.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Gülşen Yağmur Yolcu thanked IUIU management and faculty for their unwavering support.

The students lauded their instructors for their dedication, noting that the program significantly enriched their language proficiency and cultural understanding.
