IUIU Hosts University Council Members to Evaluate Major Campus Development Projects

  • 04th December, 2024 11:44am

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) hosted two distinguished members of its University Council, Prof. Eng. Badru Kiggundu and Al-Haji Kibirige Mayanja, at the main campus in Mbale on December 4, 2024. The visit was part of a campus-wide tour by the Estates, Planning, and Development Committee to assess the progress of various university projects.

The council members, together with other management officials, toured key infrastructure projects, including the completed guest house, IUIU FM, the Faculty of Agribusiness and Natural Resource Sciences, the new library, and the Faculty of Engineering, which remains under construction.

During the inspection, Prof. Eng. Badru Kiggundu expressed optimism about the university’s progress, highlighting that his team would collaborate with the Ministry of Works to fast-track the completion of the Faculty of Engineering. He also celebrated the university's strides in infrastructure development compared to a few years back.

Dr. Jamil Serwanga, the Vice-Rector in Charge of Academics, confirmed that IUIU anticipates admitting its first cohort of engineering students in the 2026/2027 academic year, starting with diploma courses before rolling out graduate programs. He added that the university is awaiting accreditation from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to formally launch the programs.

Prabhat Mishra, the project manager from VCON, informed the committee that the Faculty of Engineering is slated for completion by August 30, 2024. However, he noted that progress has been hindered by accumulating Value Added Tax (VAT) on construction materials. He appealed to the Ministry of Finance and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to waive the VAT charges to facilitate the timely completion of the project.
