The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) marked this year’s Eid al-Fitr celebrations with a powerful message of faith, education, and global solidarity. The event, held at the main campus, brought together students, staff, and members of the Muslim community.
Representing the Rector, Prof Abdul Kaziba Mpaata, the Vice-Rector in charge of Finance and Administration, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the spiritual significance of Ramadan and the responsibilities that come with Eid.
“Fasting is an obligation, a pillar of our faith,” he stated. “It is not just about abstaining from food and drink but about purifying our souls, helping the needy, and strengthening our commitment to Allah.”
Prof Mpaata urged the congregation to practice the five pillars of Islam with renewed dedication and to use Eid as an opportunity to reflect on their spiritual journey. He highlighted the importance of giving charity, performing prayers, and ensuring that acts of kindness extend beyond the holy month.

In his address, he also stressed the vital role of education in shaping the future. “The Islamic University in Uganda was established not just to provide knowledge but to prepare you for the world. Education is your weapon, your strength. Use it wisely. Teach your children, seek knowledge, and uplift your community,” he urged.
He pointed to the university’s ongoing developments, including the near completion of the Faculty of Engineering, as a testament to IUIU’s commitment to academic excellence. He encouraged parents and students to seize the opportunity to pursue higher education at the institution, emphasizing that success is measured by continuous learning and self-improvement.
Prof, Mpaata ended with a reminder of the suffering of Muslims in conflict-ridden regions such as Gaza and Baghdad. “Have you reflected on their suffering? Are we praying for them? Do we understand our responsibility as Muslims?” he asked.
He called on the audience to offer prayers and support for those affected by conflicts, urging the community to advocate for justice and humanitarian assistance.
