IUIU Officially Takes Over Faculty of Engineering and Technology from Contractor

  • 22nd July, 2025 2:04pm

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has officially taken over the newly constructed Faculty of Engineering and Technology from Vicon Construction Limited, as announced during a handover ceremony held at the Main Campus in Mbale.

The event was graced by Prof. Abdul Kaziba Mpaata, Vice Rector in charge of Finance and Administration, Prof. Eng. Badru Kigundu, representatives from Vicon, members of the University Estates and Works Committee, and guests from key partner institutions, including the National Water and Sewerage Corporation.

The Vice Rector in charge of Finance and Administration, Prof. Abdul Kaziba Mpaata, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Rector and lauded the Estates and Works Committee for their tireless efforts in overseeing the project to completion.

“This marks a new beginning, and we are committed to ensuring the facility is operational by August 4th, even if it means using our furniture,” he emphasized.

Prof. Eng. Badru Kigundu, representing the Chairperson of the University Estates and Works Committee, described the project as a historic milestone for IUIU, being the first faculty building at the university that was designed and constructed from the ground up for academic purposes. “All previous faculties were adapted from existing structures. This makes today’s handover a special moment in the university’s history,” he noted.

The project, valued at USD 13 million and funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), has been in development since 2018. Despite earlier delays and challenges, speakers commended the resilience of all parties involved, especially the technical team and the contractor, for delivering the facility.

Also present was a representative from Vicon who praised the professionalism and cooperation shown by the university team, noting the collective dedication that saw the project through to completion. “This building is not just a structure; it’s a legacy that we hope serves generations to come,” he remarked.

As part of the ceremony, symbolic keys were handed over to the Estates Committee, marking the official transition of the facility to the university. The facility is expected to host engineering students starting with the next academic year.
