The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) community joins the family, friends, and the wider Muslim Ummah in mourning the passing of Hajjat Aisha Nambooze, a distinguished alumna and devoted servant of faith and education, who passed away on October 1, 2025, in Canada.
Her passing is a deep loss not only to her beloved family but also to the IUIU fraternity and the countless lives she touched with her compassion, leadership, and service.
A Devoted Alumna and Leader
Hajjat Aisha’s contributions to IUIU will remain etched in the institution’s history. As Chairperson of the Alumni Scholarship Committee, she worked tirelessly to secure opportunities for needy students, ensuring that many could pursue their education without hindrance. Her leadership was marked by compassion, vision, and a deep commitment to serving humanity.
She will be remembered not only for her roles but for the spirit with which she carried them out, always with humility, kindness, and a sincere desire to uplift others.
A Woman of Faith and Character
Those who knew her describe her as brilliant, hardworking, and generous. She was a devout Muslim, firmly rooted in her Islamic identity and traditions, yet gentle and approachable in her interactions.
Friends often remarked that she had the rare gift of making everyone she met feel valued. She was tender, kind-hearted, and deeply professional, embodying both excellence and humility in equal measure. One close friend captured it best: “I’ve never heard someone being spoken of so beautifully by everyone, without controversy. She truly was beautiful inside and out.”
A True Partner in Life and Service
Hajjat Aisha was the beloved wife of H.E. Abdunur Sekindi, IUIU alumnus and Director General for Science and Technology at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Her steadfast support as a partner was an extension of her character, building not just her own legacy but also strengthening her husband’s journey of service to the Muslim world.
A Lasting Impact in Education
Beyond IUIU, Hajjat Aisha’s influence was deeply felt in the education sector:
Headmistress at Lukman School: She nurtured many children, treating them not just as students but as her own. They loved her dearly, and her presence inspired trust and admiration among parents and colleagues alike.
Continued Mentorship: Even after her pupils moved on, she kept close ties—visiting them at schools such as Nabisunsa and others across Kampala. For many of these students, her visits were moments of joy, as though a beloved mother or mentor had come to see them.
Champion for Opportunities: She worked tirelessly to ensure that her candidates secured placements in respected schools, such as Kawempe Muslim, opening doors that shaped their futures.
Her legacy in education is not measured in the classrooms she led, but in the hearts and lives of the countless children and families she uplifted.
Condolences from IUIU
On behalf of the University, the Rector, Assoc. Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda extended most profound sympathies to H.E. Abdunur Sekindi and the entire family:
“May the Almighty Allah (SWT) accept all her good deeds, forgive her shortcomings, and grant Hajjat Aisha Nambooze Jannatul Firdaus. May Allah grant her family patience (sabr) and comfort during this moment of grief.”
A Legacy to Inspire Generations
Funeral arrangements included her burial in Toronto, Canada, following Juma prayers.
As the IUIU community bids farewell, we also celebrate a life well lived—a life of faith, service, and love. Hajjat Aisha Nambooze leaves behind an enduring legacy, woven into the fabric of IUIU’s story and the countless lives she touched.
May Allah (SWT) reunite us with her in Jannatul Firdaus.
