IUIU strengthens academic linkages as Prof. Huseyin Mertol engages Geography Department and students

  • 17th February, 2026 3:30pm

The Islamic University in Uganda recently hosted Prof. Huseyin Mertol from Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University (TOGU) during an academic visit that included high-level engagements and a practical learning session with students.

Prof. Mertol was received by the Erasmus Coordinator, Saim Celik, together with the Head of the Department of Geography, Godi Jamal. The delegation held a meeting focused on departmental priorities and areas of cooperation, including opportunities for academic exchange and knowledge-sharing that can support the growth of the Geography programme.

As part of the visit, Prof. Mertol paid a courtesy call on the Rector, reaffirming the importance of institutional collaboration and student-centred learning. He also met with the Campus director Dr Taha Kasule and Deputy Academic Registrar, Sumare Muhammed, where the benefits of ongoing engagements were mutually shared.

In addition to the meetings, Prof. Mertol held a student engagement activity featuring Ebru art mapping. During the session, he demonstrated the technique and guided participants as students applied the approach themselves in a hands-on exercise. The activity offered a creative platform for students to connect geographic thinking with visual representation in an interactive and inspiring environment.

IUIU appreciated Prof. Mertol for dedicating time to engage university leadership, staff, and students, and for delivering a unique learning experience that blended geography with art and practical participation.
