The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has registered another significant milestone in legal education after its Faculty of Law team was crowned the Best East African Team at the 2026 Daystar Media Moot Court Competition (DMCC), held at Daystar University’s Athi River Campus in Machakos, Kenya.
IUIU was represented by nine law students: Birungi Hairat, Alinda Nasser, Tulibagenyi Conrad, Tembula Nuru, Bashir Rumaisa, Odoi Derrick, Mirembe Anisah, Chemusto Ruth Gloria and Kamira Sureya.

The delegation was coached and mentored by Her Worship Nambuya Riziki, a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, whose leadership, intellectual guidance, and commitment were instrumental in preparing the students for the competition.
Under her supervision, the team underwent intensive preparation, conducting extensive legal research, drafting legal memorials, developing and refining oral submissions, and participating in internal mock trials to strengthen their advocacy and courtroom skills.
This rigorous preparation equipped the students to demonstrate not only their knowledge of substantive law but also key professional competencies in legal research, analytical reasoning, teamwork, persuasive advocacy, and oral presentation.
“IUIU being recognised as the Best East African Team is more than a competitive victory. It demonstrates the quality and potential of the University’s students and underscores the value of investing in experiential and practice-oriented legal education.” — Her Worship Nambuya Riziki

The team’s success reflects the Islamic University in Uganda’s continued commitment to academic excellence, practical legal training and the development of strong advocacy skills among its law students.
The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr Adeyemo Wale Abdul Lateef, commended the collective contribution of University Management, the Faculty of Law and the wider IUIU community in creating opportunities for students to develop and showcase their abilities beyond the classroom.
The University looks forward to building on this success by creating more opportunities for students to distinguish themselves nationally, regionally and internationally. IUIU congratulates the students for their discipline, teamwork and commitment throughout the competition and commends Her Worship Nambuya Riziki for the mentorship, leadership and dedication that guided the team to this regional achievement.
