On 25th October 2023, the Registry of Patents at Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), granted a Utility Model with respect to an Invention application by staff of the Motion Analysis Research Laboratory (MARL) of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU). The application filed on 16th January 2023 (Utility Model Application No.: UG/U/2023/2), disclosed an invention entitled “A Method and System for Country-wide Reporting and Visualization of Hospital-Managed Cases of Infectious Diseases”. The Innovation was made by staff of IUIU Kampala-Campus at MARL, including; Dr Umar Yahya, Mr Matsiko Innocent, Mr Ssegawa Abdul-Karim, Mr Pember Fahad, and Mr Mwaka Lucky.
A Utility Model is an exclusive right granted by the government for an innovation/invention, that is either a product or process and offers a new technical solution to a problem. The term of protection of a Utility Model is 10 years, and this protection gives the holder the right to exclude others from exploiting the protected innovation/invention. The Innovation in this particular case was a device and system that enables seamless reporting and visualization of hospital-managed cases of infectious diseases during multiple outbreaks in a Country, at any point in time (i.e. case count).
The grant of the utility model now allows IUIU and the Innovators to explore the various commercialization pathways for this solution. “This is indeed an encouraging achievement. We are pleased that after quite a lengthy examination period of our application, a grant of utility model has been the outcome. We will now explore the commercialization and scaling options available to us, with the help and guidance of the University”, shares Dr Yahya Umar, the Head of MARL.
On behalf of University Management, the Office of the Rector – IUIU has congratulated the team of researchers on this milestone.
