Assoc. Prof. Matovu Highlights Successful PhD Dissertation Defense at IUIU

A team of staff and students from Islamic University in Uganda attended two (2) days of the first-ever National ICT Job Fair organized by Huawei Technologies Ltd together with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance and hosted by Makerere University from August 12th – 13th, 2022. The IUIU team included Mr. Adam Ali (team leader), Ms. Kantono Rehema (Public Relations Officer), Mr. Solimo Rajab (IUIU-ICT Huawei Academy Coordinator), Chekwoti Ramadhan, and Mr. Oluwole Afolabi (for the ICT Department), and 3 students from the Department of Computer Science, undertaking Huawei certification courses.
The event was graced by H.E Hon (Rtd) Maj. Jesca Alupo, the vice president of the republic of Uganda. She thanked Huawei and the ministry of ICT for organizing this first-ever job fair in Uganda to give our young people an opportunity to find jobs, internship placements, and free industry training programs when the world was celebrating the youth. The Vice president asked the organizers to make the event an annual event and be organized in different regions of the country. Other dignitaries present at the event included the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, State Minister for ICT and national guidance, Permanent Secretary Ministry of ICT, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, the Vice president of Huawei South Africa Region, Vice Chancellor Makerere University among others.
The two days event attracted several companies and organizations who showcased over 1,100 opportunities for young people. These opportunities included 234 internships, 316 jobs, and 550 free training opportunities. “We want to use ICT as leverage to get jobs for our young people,” said Aminah Zawedde, the permanent secretary of the Uganda Ministry of ICT and National Guidance. She further said that the ministry has set up an ICT hub at the Uganda institute of information and communication Technology with support from leading ICT tech giants like Cisco to provide young people with practical skills to fit into the job market.
