IUIU Champions Integration of Knowledge at 6th IIUC Conference

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) is emphasizing the need for educational and research policies that integrate both the Humanities and sciences to enhance the Integration of Knowledge (IOK) in higher levels of education.

This event took place during the 6th International Islamic Universities Conference, organized in partnership with the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), held at the main campus in Mbale from August 4th to 6th, 2025.

The paper was presented by Dr. Gyagenda AbdulSwamad, a scholar of education and Islamic studies, and the Deputy Director for Research, Publication and Innovation at IUIU, co-presented by Nawal Abdallah, a Master’s candidate and teaching assistant in the Department of Islamic Studies, titled “The Interplay between Sciences and Humanities: An Enduring Value of Humanities in a STEM-Dominated World,”.

Dr. Gyagenda and Nawal reminded participants of the lasting relevance of humanities ethics, aesthetics, spirituality, and human values in today’s world, where science and technology often take precedence. They cautioned against creating a dichotomy between sciences and the arts, stressing that human civilization flourishes when both are given equal weight.

Dr. Gyagenda emphasized that the way forward lies in knowledge integration. By bridging sciences and humanities, universities can better prepare graduates to address the complex moral, social, and technological challenges of a rapidly changing society.

At IUIU, the research policy places Integration of Knowledge at its core. In teaching and learning, courses such as Introduction to Islam and Islam and Science ensure that spirituality, Islamic values, and ethical principles are embedded alongside professional training. This model highlights IUIU as a leading institution where sciences and humanities meet to nurture well-rounded graduates.
