  • 09th April, 2026 10:54am

Islamic University in Uganda has commenced a three-day staff training workshop aimed at strengthening competence-based education, in line with national standards set by the National Council for Higher Education.

The training, running from 9th April to 11th, 2026, is taking place at the main campus in Mbale and has brought together Directors of Campuses, Deans, Heads of Departments, and examination coordinators.

Held under the theme “Institutionalised Competence-Based Education in Higher Education: Values Integration, Innovation, and Strategic Repositioning at IUIU,” the workshop focuses on equipping academic staff with practical skills in designing competence-based curricula aligned to NCHE minimum standards.

The training will cover key areas including the development and assessment of competency maps, drafting Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) and Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), and designing curriculum structures with appropriate credit unit allocation and notional hours.

Participants will also engage in sessions on competence-based teaching and learning strategies, assessment frameworks supported by rubrics, and the formulation of internship and integration project plans. Additionally, the workshop will address curriculum alignment matrices to ensure coherence between learning outcomes and assessment methods.

The initiative is expected to enhance curriculum development processes at the university, reinforcing IUIU’s commitment to delivering quality, innovative, and competence-driven higher education.
