IUIU Launches PhD in Law, Expands Facilities for Students

The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Faculty of Law has marked a major milestone with the accreditation of its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law program, alongside the relocation of students to more spacious lecture facilities at the Faculty of Engineering.

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Adeyemo Wale Lateef, Dean of the Faculty of Law, described the PhD program as “very unique” and one that sets IUIU apart from other law schools in the region.

“Our PhD program combines three semesters of intensive coursework with three semesters of research, preparing candidates for careers in academia, the judiciary, and public service,” Dr. Lateef explained. “We thank Almighty Allah, the university leadership, and the National Council for Higher Education for entrusting us with this responsibility.”

The dean added that the program offers candidates the opportunity to explore comparative legal systems, integrating both Islamic and common law traditions, making it one of the most comprehensive doctoral programs in Uganda.

In addition to the new program, the Faculty of Law recently moved its students into larger classrooms at the Faculty of Engineering, a shift welcomed by students. The new facilities boast over 27 lecture rooms, modern furniture and hostels.

Leonard Chemtai, President of the IUIU Law Students’ Society (2025–2026), hailed the move as “a great milestone” that resolves years of logistical challenges.

“Having a dedicated and conducive space for lectures will greatly improve our learning environment,” Chemtai said.

“This also reflects the trust and growth of our faculty, which now has the capacity to train students up to the doctoral level. Many of us look forward to returning for our master’s and PhD studies.”

Mirembe Anisa, a first-year student of law, highlighted the university’s inclusive environment, emphasising that IUIU welcomes learners from different faiths.

“As a Christian in an Islamic university, I have been given the freedom to exercise my faith without restriction. This is a disciplined and decent institution that values diversity,” she said.

“Those who may fear that religion is a barrier should know that all students are welcome here.”
