IUIU Mourns The Loss of First Guild President and Former Lecturer, Dr Ashadu Sentongo

Dr. Ashad Sentongo, a distinguished pioneer of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), has passed away.

He has left a profound legacy in the fields of education, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding. Dr. Sentongo was among the first group of 81 students to enroll at IUIU when the university opened its doors on February 10, 1988. His leadership qualities were quickly recognized, and he was elected as the First Students Guild President.

Dr. Sentongo graduated from IUIU in 1991 with a B.A. in Islamic Studies and Arabic Language and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education. He furthered his academic journey in the United States, earning a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University.

His commitment to learning led him to pursue specialized studies and training at Brandeis University, the United Nations Department of Political Affairs, the National Defence University, and the Damelin School of Management in South Africa.
Dr. Sentongo was also a Drucie French Cumbie Fellow, focusing on power-sharing and ethnic conflict in Africa.

In 2013, Dr. Sentongo joined the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) as the Director of Africa Programs. In this role, he collaborated with the African Union, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and the East African Community to build, train, and provide technical assistance to the African Network for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention. His expertise and dedication were instrumental in shaping strategies to prevent violence and foster peace across the continent.

Dr. Sentongo was also a consultant to various government and international organizations, offering his insights on defense, development, countering violent extremism, conflict, and peacebuilding. His profound impact on these fields has left an indelible mark on countless lives and communities.

Dr. Ashad Sentongo’s life was a testament to the power of education, leadership, and the relentless pursuit of peace. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to strive for a more just and peaceful world.
