The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) was represented at the 8th Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals (KAMMP) Scientific Conference, held from 8th to 11th October 2026 at the Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort in Mombasa. The conference ran under the theme “Healthy Life Course, Healthy Planet: Advancing Excellence, Ethics and Digital Health for All.”
The Ugandan delegation was led by Dr. Naziru Rashid, the University Medical Officer at IUIU, who presented a paper titled “From Framework to Practice: Operationalizing Islamic Integration in Medical Education Curriculum and Research.”
The presentation built on IUIU’s earlier work on integrating Islamic knowledge into medical training and moved from identifying the gaps to proposing practical solutions. It examined how the same framework, the Islamic Input in Medical Curriculum (IIMC), works differently in Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority countries. It focused on four areas: building faculty who are trained in both medicine and Islamic studies, assessment and accreditation, research ethics, and the real-world impact of integration on graduates’ practice. Dr. Rashid argued that institutions in Muslim-minority settings such as Uganda need a deliberately different model, not a scaled-down version of the majority-context one. He also called for a shared alumni tracer study across Islamic medical colleges to practice.
Dr. Rashid also took part in a panel discussion on “Medicine as a trust: Building professional, Ethical and Ibaada friendly Healthcare “. He drew on IUIU’s experience to stress that technical competence alone does not produce professionals who are ethical, compassionate and conscious of their responsibility to Allah and to humanity. He added that this only happens when Islamic content is taught by prepared faculty, properly assessed, and followed up with evidence.
Other participants from Uganda included:
The East African regional meeting of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA) also took place during the conference, bringing together Muslim health professionals from across the region.
