The Faculty of Law at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) is embarking on a period of growth and innovation under the leadership of its new Dean, Dr. Abdullateef Wale Adeyemo. In a recent interview with the IUIU Office of Public Relations, Dr. Adeyemo unveiled a series of initiatives to cultivate ethical and well-rounded legal professionals.

Dr. Adeyemo emphasized the importance of a strong moral foundation for future lawyers. As part of his vision, he plans to introduce a law clinic offering students practical experience while adhering to high ethical standards. Additionally, a variety of symposiums, moot courts, and conferences—both virtual and in-person will be organized to expose students and faculty to moral dilemmas and best practices in the legal field.

Dr. Adeyemo placed a strong emphasis on teamwork and collaboration with both students and staff, addressing student concerns proactively and emphasizing the need for a united effort.

He acknowledged the challenges facing the faculty, including the need for additional lecture rooms, furniture, library space, and a dedicated office for postgraduate coordinators. He intends to advocate for the construction of permanent structures to address these spatial constraints.

To support the faculty's development, Dr. Adeyemo has strategic plans to meet with various Ugandan law enforcement bodies, including the police, judges, soldiers, and alumni, to discuss challenges and explore collaborative solutions. He also aims to leverage cooperation with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to secure additional assistance.

Dr. Adeyemo urged students to maintain high ethical standards, emphasizing that misconduct, including physical or verbal altercations, can jeopardize their academic success and future legal careers.

A Distinguished Career

Dr. Wale Lateef Adeyemo brings a wealth of experience and academic excellence to his new role. He obtained an LL. B in Combined Laws (Common Law and Islamic Law) from Bayero University Kano, Nigeria, in 1994. He then attended the Nigerian Law School in Lagos, earning his Barrister at Law Certificate (B.L) in 1996, and was enrolled as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He further acquired a Master's Degree in Law and a Master of Commercial and Business Law in 2008, followed by a Ph.D. in Islamic Banking and Finance from the Islamic Science University of Malaysia in 2020.

Dr. Adeyemo has extensive teaching and professional experience. He served as a lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic, Nigeria, from 1998 to 2005, and at Xylem Consulting (Chartered Accountants) School in Katsina, Nigeria, from 2012 to 2015. He also taught at Lagos State University, Nigeria, from 2021 to 2022, before joining the Islamic University in Uganda in 2022. Besides lecturing, he practiced law in Kano and other locations in Nigeria and led the W. A. Abdullateef Law Firm before serving under Nigeria's 2022 Technical Aid Corps (TAC) program at IUIU.

Dr. Adeyemo's contributions to academia are notable. He won the 2023 International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) grant for his project titled "Gateway to Islamic Business Transactions," which aims to provide students and researchers with practical skills and a deep understanding of Shariah norms in Islamic business transactions, as well as to assist policymakers in formulating appropriate policies that enhance organizational performance and promote economic growth globally.

Under Dr. Adeyemo's leadership, IUIU's Faculty of Law is poised to become a beacon of ethical legal education and professional excellence, fostering the next generation of lawyers with a strong moral compass and a commitment to justice.
