The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has launched a state-of-the-art female hostel at its Kampala Campus in Kibuli. The launch was graced by Ambassador Nusurah Tiperu, Uganda’s Ambassador to Türkiye and Chairperson of the IUIU Estates Committee, members of the university council, staff, and well-wishers.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Tiperu commended the Kakungulu family for their generosity towards the Muslim fraternity, particularly in donating land that has enabled IUIU's growth. She highlighted the university’s capacity to host over 50,000 students, crediting its success to the able management committee. She added,
“The university has been blessed with land from the Government of Uganda in different parts of the country. With this and our master plans, IUIU can potentially establish the largest campus in East Africa.” Ambassador Tiperu also thanked the Government of Uganda for its continued support of IUIU as a host nation.
Dr. Twaha Ahmed Kasule, Director of the Kampala Campus, provided a historical perspective on the campus's development. Established in October 2001, the campus was created to increase access to quality education for all members of society. This expansion was made possible by a generous donation of 5 acres of land by Prince Dr. Kasim Nakibinge Kakungulu through the Young Men’s Muslim Association following IUIU’s 13 years of operation as a single campus in Mbale.
Dr. Kasule noted that the campus began with only 186 students across eight academic programs. Today, it has grown to accommodate over 4,260 students enrolled in 45 academic programs within eight faculties. Approximately 10% of these students are international from over 19 countries, reflecting the university's broad appeal.
Associate Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, Rector of IUIU, welcomed the guests and commended the Estates Committee, led by Ambassador Tiperu, for their guidance in ensuring the institution's growth and development. He extended his gratitude to the Government of Uganda, the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Nigeria, among others, for their unwavering support over the years.
Prof. Gyagenda proudly revealed that the hostel was constructed using internally generated funds and assured all partners that the IUIU administration will always use all resources rendered efficiently for the great benefit of the nation.
