The faculty of law at the Islamic University in Uganda has launched a new dress code and the operation law for discipline for students to foster professionalism and discipline among law students on Saturday, August 31, 2024. The new regulations require male students to wear suits, while their female colleagues are to wear long gowns with white head scarfs. The approved colors for the new dress code include Black, white, deep blue, dark green and dark brown.
The Academic Registrar, Dr. Halima Akbar Wakabi, commended the initiative, crediting the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. AbdulLateef Wale Adeyemo, for championing the new dress code.
"The new dress code aligns with the university's rules and regulations, and it will greatly benefit the students throughout their academic journey and beyond." She emphasized her commitment to supporting the dean in maintaining this new standard, noting that it demonstrates a shared commitment to upholding the values of professionalism and decorum.
Dr. AbdulLateef Wale Adeyemo, the dean of the Faculty of Law, provided further insight into the rationale behind the dress code. "This is not a new concept, it is, in fact, the standard dress code for legal professionals worldwide. Such attire reflects the good conduct expected of a law student and earns them respect from people within and outside the university."
Dr. Adeyemo added that the dress code is designed to help students build a professional image and inspire others within and outside the university.
Ali Nuru Ali, the President of the Law Students' Society at IUIU, encouraged his peers to embrace the new dress code as it will help them present themselves as professional lawyers in training. He also advised students to comply with the dress code to avoid missing lectures and presentations, which could negatively impact their academic performance.
Richard Tobo, the Speaker of the Law Students' Society, also Advised the students to Adhere to this dress code.
"It prepares us for our professional roles, as no court allows lawyers to dress in anything other than the prescribed colors. This is part of our training for the future."
The commencement date for operationalisation of operation law for discipline is 9th September 2024
