The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Law Society held a symposium on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) under the theme, "Promoting Awareness of the Principles and Limits Inherent in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for Army Officers at Bugema Barracks and the Entire IUIU Student Body." on Thursday, 14th November 2024, at the main campus in Mbale.
The symposium featured The Hon. Justice. Lubega Farouk of the Mbale High Court as the distinguished guest speaker. Justice Lubega delivered a profound keynote address on the importance of IHL in modern contexts, emphasizing its critical role in fostering peace through adherence to principles such as care for the wounded, the right to communication for prisoners of war, and maintaining ethical conduct during conflicts.
The Hon. Justice. Lubega commended the IUIU Faculty of Law for organizing the event and fostering awareness among students and military officers. He further inspired fourth-year law students by offering them an opportunity to visit the High Court for legal internships, highlighting the value of practical exposure in shaping legal professionals. Additionally, he encouraged students to join the International Humanitarian Law Club, highlighting the myriad opportunities it presents in the legal field.
The Vice Rector in charge of Academic Affairs, Dr. Jamil Serwanga, lauded the Law Society's initiative in bridging academic knowledge and real-world applications of law, particularly in areas of humanitarian significance.
In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Adeyemo Wale, attributed the growing popularity of the law program, which now boasts over 3000 students across all campuses, to the strong foundation laid by alumni and their professional achievements. “Our alumni continue to inspire trust in the quality of education provided here, making our programs highly sought after,” he noted.
Her Worship Riziki Nambuya, a Grade One Magistrate and lecturer in the Faculty of Law, expressed her appreciation to Justice Lubega for sharing invaluable insights with students and praised the exceptional performance of IUIU law students. She highlighted their recent victory in a moot court competition, which showcased their legal acumen and placed the university at the forefront of legal excellence.
