Nkoma SS Triumphs Over St. Mary’s in 93.1 IUIU FM Inter-school Debate Tournament

Nkoma Secondary School emerged victorious at the 93.1 IUIU FM debate finals held on Thursday, July 27, 2024, at the main campus in Mbale.

The competition, organized by 93.1 IUIU FM, began on June 10, 2024, attracting 18 schools under the theme “Strength in Diversity: Celebrating the Brilliance of Every Girl and Boy Child.”

The finals took place at Summaya Hall, where Nkoma Secondary School faced off against St. Mary’s High School Busamaga, winning with a score of 79.75% to 75%.

Nkoma SS secured first place, followed by St. Mary’s High School Busamaga first runners up, Iki-ki Secondary School second runners up, and Mbale Parents’ Secondary School third runners up.

Dr. Halima Wakabi Akbar, the Academic Registrar of the Islamic University in Uganda and the chief guest, congratulated Nkoma SS on their victory and praised IUIU FM for organizing the debate competitions.

She emphasized that student participation in debates alongside academics contributes to character building and confidence.

Mr. Yusufu Mayanja, the station manager of IUIU FM, highlighted the importance of the young generation in national development and announced efforts to introduce Islamic music, dance, and drama on the radio to promote Islamic entertainment.

He also commended the participating schools and encouraged them to return next year.

Ms. Rehema Kantono, the public relations officer at IUIU, applauded the university for supporting and funding the competition. She emphasized that such initiatives provide a platform for students to form teams that can represent the region in national debates.

Mr. Okoth Ivan, the patron of St. Mary’s High School debating club, congratulated Nkoma SS and expressed gratitude to IUIU FM and IUIU for organizing the event. He promised that his team would come back stronger for the next competition.

Ms. Nambozo Christine Wadada, the patron of Nkoma SS, congratulated all participating teams and encouraged them to learn from the event, noting that every failure brings a lesson.
