The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) is participating in a 1-Year pilot project on Commercializing Academic Research and Innovations (CARI) arising out of academic and research activities within universities. The project led and coordinated by RUFORUM with support of Science Technology and Innovation – Office of the President (STI-OP), aims to identify a commercialization model tailored to Uganda’s Academia and Industry setting. The participating Universities include; Islamic University in Uganda, Makerere University, Nkumba University, Busitema University, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

On 15th August 2023, the CARI project Team held a full-day workshop at RUFORUM offices in Makerere, in which delegates from the University of Pavia, Italy, shared their university’s experience in light of the objectives of CARI project. IUIU was represented at the workshop by Dr Yahya Umar, Head of Motion Analysis Research Laboratory (MARL). “This pilot project will address core issues surrounding commercialization of innovations arising out of academic and research activities within Universities. Very often, people in academia find it hard to look at their solutions beyond a technical level. This project aims to realize the commercialization pathway, where an academic solution is translated into a product or service at commercial level”, explains Dr Yahya.

Dr Yahya Umar and Prof. Mohamed El Nour Taha (Dean Faculty of Agribusiness & Natural Resource Sciences), are the two focal persons nominated to CARI Project by IUIU.
