On 12th July 2023, the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), signed a 5-Year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The Rector – IUIU, Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, and his OAU counterpart, Professor Bamire Adebayo Simeon, were both present at the signing ceremony that took place virtually via Zoom platform.

The MoU cements the IUIU-OAU engagement, following a successful 5-day Cybersecurity Workshop held at IUIU’s Kampala Campus from 22nd to 26th May 2023, which was facilitated by experts from OAU’s Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE). The MoU will now aim to explore 6 broad forms of cooperation, for mutual benefit. They include: -

  1. Students and Staff Exchange programs through further studies opportunities and sabbatical leave programs, respectively.
  2. Jointly organize high impact seminars, workshops and conferences
  3. Continuous capacity building in the core areas of emerging technologies through training, short courses and work attachment.
  4. Joint-Grants applications for high impact research projects.
  5. Aid in the establishment and development of Curriculum for Bachelor, Master and PhD in Cyber Security Studies and related courses.
  6. Other forms of cooperation relating to humanity services, as well as a series of other activities to be mutually agreed upon by either Parties

The Rector – IUIU, Professor Ismail, commended OAU for their global ambitions and the spirit of cooperation, aimed at fostering international collaborations. “IUIU is now 35 years old, of course younger than OAU, but our aspirations are quite similar. I therefore thank you very much for agreeing to this MoU, and I believe that should we proceed to pursue its aspirations, a great deal of good outcomes awaits us all”, remarked Professor Ismail, Rector – IUIU. The Vice Chancellor of OAU, Professor Bamire Adebayo Simeon, thanked the IUIU, for the hospitality shown to OAU staff during their week-long stay recently. “I wish to thank you, on my behalf and on behalf of the management of OAU, for the great hospitality accorded to our staff while in Uganda recently during the Cybersecurity Workshop. It is our desire that we should host you too at OAU, in the very near future. I have no doubt that both our teams, will do all that is required in order for us to realize the aspirations of this MoU signed today”, said Professor A.S Bamire.

The Rector IUIU thanked Dr Umar Yahya, Head of MARL, and Professor Rafiu Salawu, a Professor in the Faculty of Management Studies, for their efforts in ensuring that the IUIU-OAU relationship reaches this MoU level. Also present at the signing ceremony were: - Dr Jamil Serwanga, the Vice Rector Academic Affairs; Dr Kasozi Sinani, Deputy Director Kampala Campus; Dr Aremu Abdul Mujeeb from the Anatomy department of IUIU’s Habib Medical School; Mr Oluwole Afolabi, the Website Manager; Dr Abdal Kasule from the Department of Computer Science; and Ms Zamzam Ahmed, Senior Adminstrative Secretary, Officer of the Rector. The Vice Chancellor of OAU was in the company of his deputy, Professor O.M.A Daramola; Professor  Ganiyu Adesola Aderounmu, the Director of OAU’s ACE; among other members of OAU management.
