IUIU Students from the Department of Social Work and Social Administration (SWASA) under their umbrella association the ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (IUSWA) visited St Francis School of the Blind in Soroti on Friday 29th September 2023.

The visit was a fieldwork program aimed at ascertaining the challenges faced by children with disability and recommending solutions under the theme "Appreciating the role of Social work and social Administration in community transformation".

Some of the challenges noted from the interaction with the students and staff at St Francis School of the Blind include the Lack of enough skilled Labor i.e., teachers. Shortage of equipment. Deployment of students Lack of support. Exclusion from participation in co-curricular activities. Poor infrastructures

The head girl St Francis Secondary School for the blind Namuwenge Barbra commended the parents who are supporting their disabled children and urged other parents with disabled children to do the same ‘’ disabled children have a lot of blessings and untapped potential’’.

Barbra called upon the stakeholders and government leaders to educate the public about disabled people and how to assist them where need be. ‘’ when we move in cities like Kampala or Mbale many people do not know about the importance of the white cane and how it assists the blind people in mobility.’’  She also commended IUIU for the love they showcased for the disabled by visiting and interacting with them.

IUSWA President Zia Adrian Nyirira said the activity enabled them to develop ideas of starting up projects or NGOs that are driven towards improving people's lives in different societies, identify potential places for internship, and employment in the future, let alone provoking thoughts to ideas of job creation.

Adrian commended, the staff and the administration of the Islamic University in Uganda for their support, Organizations that have always opened their doors to calls, and students for always involving themselves in such activities.
