‘’An effective university looks to see how its presence can impact the community around it’’ Dr Halima Wakabi Akbar

The academic registrar Islamic University in Uganda has said that nowadays universities are not only seen as tools for teaching and research but also as community engagement and service. This was during the closing ceremony of the five-day radio training event on Friday 19th January 2024 at the university boardroom.

The event which started on Monday, 15th January was organized by the Islamic University in Uganda under the Department of Mass Communication and IUIU FM, aimed to bridge the gap between young individuals like high school students, vacationists eager to venture into radio broadcasting, and seasoned practitioners looking to refine their craft.

The training curriculum covered a wide range of topics, catering to the diverse needs of the attendees. Beginners were introduced to the fundamentals of radio production, including scriptwriting, voice modulation, and the effective use of broadcast equipment.

The participants thanked the university for organizing the event at the right time when students are still home for the holidays enabling vacists, and other enthusiasts to be part of the training.

Mr. Eric Shikoli a teacher by profession and participant in the training. ‘’ we thank you for equipping us with the techniques and skills of Radio’’

‘’ For the few days we have been here we are somehow equipped to face the world of Radio shortly’’

He urged the university to organize other trainings focusing on other areas like computer literacy which seemed a challenge to some of the members.

Ms Karungi Angel a senior four vacist and participant said the training has brought her dream of being a journalist closer to reality. She added that some of the skills she attained include fieldwork, gathering information from sources, research, and hosting programs.

‘’After this training, I hope to finish my Alevel and later join University to pursue my dream of being a journalist’’

Mr Mayanja Musisi the stations Manager of IUIU FM commended the university for facilitating the event and supporting the radio. he urged the participants to use the skills they have attained for the betterment of society and urged them to come back for other training that will be organized.

The Academics registrar at IUIU Dr Halima Wakabi Akbar commended the Department of communication and IUIU FM for organizing the event.

‘’Universities are no longer ivory towers for only the elites. An effective university looks to see how its presence can impact the community around it to make it better and to benefit the community around it.’’ She added.

Dr Halima congratulated the participants for completing the training and urged them to come back for other trainings that may be organized.

While handing over certificates to the participants, she also encouraged the young participants to take up courses at IUIU after high school and the older participants to advantage of the mature age entry program available at the university.
