Today, 25th January 2023, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) hosted a Public Lecture titled “Defining your Mission and Goals in Life” organized by the Centre for Capacity Development. The distinguished speaker was Dr Munir A. Safieldin. Also in attendance were the Rector, Prof Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda and the Director, of Kampala Campus and other staff members of IUIU.

Dr Mohamed El Munir A. Safieldin (Munir Safieldin) is the UNICEF Representative to the Republic of Uganda, having joined the country office in January 2021. He is a seasoned public policy analyst, economist, and strategist with over 30 years of experience in the UN and NGOs.  Recently, he served as UNICEF Representative to the Maldives and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and as UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, where he oversaw and facilitated the international humanitarian response to over five million civilians affected by the violence triggered by Boko Haram.

The Centre for Capacity Development (CCD) was established to drive the implementation of one of the core functions of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) as an institution. Personality Development is identified in the IUIU strategic plan 2015/16 – 2020/21 as the fourth core function of IUIU and it is defined as “an organized pattern of character, behaviour, and attitude that makes a holistic individual”. The strategic objective of this core function is “to establish co-curricular activities that will elevate the position of the staff and students in the society and at the same time contribute their morals and character”.

It was an insightful and engaging lecture as there were over one hundred and twenty persons in attendance both in the lecture hall and online combined. During the lecture, the speaker said “before you get to a successful resume or CV, you have to go through failed resumes, failed job applications and whenever you go through failure, sit down, reflect, and see what lessons you can learn”.

At the end of the lecture, the Rector, Prof Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda admonished everyone in attendance never to despise the little beginning, he stressed that one has to go through twists and turns to achieve life goals.
